Why simple software is the ultimate discipline in development

Software should simply work. Software developer Pablo explains why exactly this simplicity is often the biggest challenge in development.

One sentence we hear regularly in software development is: “The solution should work as simply and intuitively as possible.”

And in my view, that is exactly what good software should do. Nobody wants to deal with complicated processes, cluttered interfaces or unnecessary clicks every day.

What is interesting, though: the simpler a solution is meant to feel later on, the more thought usually goes into it.

At its best, good software explains itself

When a piece of software is really well built, you hardly notice much of it in everyday use. You find your way around quickly. Workflows feel logical. Information is where you expect it to be.

That is rarely a coincidence.

Behind seemingly simple interfaces there are often many technical decisions, considerations and rounds of coordination.

Which information really matters? How do you cut unnecessary complexity? How do you build a solution that stays clear even though a lot of processes run in the background?

These are the questions that occupy developers more than many people would expect.

Fewer clicks do not automatically mean less effort

What looks simple from the outside is often surprisingly complex technically. For processes to work as smoothly as possible for users, a lot has to fit together cleanly in the background. Data has to be processed correctly. Different parts of a piece of software have to work together. And solutions should remain extensible in the long run. That is exactly why “simple software” often takes a great deal of development work.

Good development also means leaving things out

Something I keep finding interesting in projects: not every feature automatically makes software better. Sometimes good usability comes precisely from deliberately reducing or simplifying certain things. The more complex an interface becomes, the harder it often is to use day to day. So the challenge is often not to build in as much as possible, but to work out what really makes sense.

Simple solutions need good collaboration

For software to feel simple later on, development alone is not enough. Good solutions come from collaboration between development, project management, design and the client. Only when everyone involved shares an understanding of the processes, requirements and user needs do you end up with a solution that works technically and is pleasant to use at the same time.

Why simplicity is often the biggest challenge

Many people automatically associate complex development with complex interfaces. In practice, it is often the other way round. Complicated solutions come about fairly quickly. Truly simple solutions, on the other hand, take time, planning and a lot of technical thought. And that is exactly why, from a developer’s point of view, simple software is often the biggest challenge.
