My bachelor’s thesis at xappido

A bachelor’s thesis does not have to end up in a drawer. Kevin wrote his at his own workplace, on real systems. What came of it is a software module that has been in use ever since.

Studying computer science is interesting, but what happens when theory meets real requirements?

I was fortunate enough to be able to write my bachelor’s thesis directly at my employer, xappido ag. What came out of it was not only a working software module, but also a deep look at how research, development and practice connect.

A webhook framework at the heart of the thesis

My thesis, “Konzipierung und Entwicklung eines neuartigen WebHook-Frameworks” (design and development of a new kind of webhook framework), was about building a technical solution with which external systems – SAP or third-party platforms, for instance – can be informed reliably and securely about events in an xappido customer portal.

Webhook systems like this are essential in modern software landscapes. At the same time they are demanding when it comes to scalability, security and configurability. My goal was to create a framework that can handle a range of authentication methods flexibly, performs well and fits seamlessly into the existing architecture.

How xappido supported my studies

What made this work special: I was able to do it directly as part of my job at xappido. That meant not only access to real systems and real requirements, but also a team that had my back whenever I had questions – all our university graduates on academic questions, our knowledgeable project managers on questions of process, and our engineering teams whenever something was technically unclear.

Everyday working life as a student at xappido is shaped by responsibility, trust and technical depth. I was able to work independently on a strategically important module, experience agile processes and use modern technologies.

The result in two minutes

Part of submitting the thesis is a pitch video, which I was able to produce together with the xappido marketing team.

And what happens next?

The thesis itself is finished, but its subject continues to have an effect. My supervisor was so convinced by its relevance and its implementation that he nominated it for the Siemens Excellence Award. That would not have been possible without the close collaboration with xappido: only the direct link to practice, the trust placed in my work and access to real technical challenges made this thesis possible at all.

My conclusion

I am grateful for the chance to finish my studies with such a practical piece of work – and even more so for the trust xappido placed in me while I did it.

My employer xappido did not just make an interesting subject possible; it also offered surroundings in which I could grow, professionally and personally. And for me that is exactly what makes a great employer.
